What is a 'retreat'?

A retreat is a dedicated space where you step away from your usual routine to focus on your project, make real progress, and get support when you need it. It combines independent working time with guidance from staff, helping you move your EPQ forward in a focused and supportive environment.

Who is the EPQ Retreat for?

The EPQ Retreat is for students currently completing an EPQ who would benefit from protected time to work on their project and additional academic guidance. Places are limited, and priority will be given to students who meet contextual admissions criteria as part of the University’s widening participation work. If you have any questions about the EPQ Retreat 2026, please email us: learnwithus@soton.ac.uk.

What can I expect during the EPQ Retreat?

  • Protected time to write and develop your EPQ - a calm and focused environment
  • Structured time to help you stay productive
  • A balance of independent work and targeted support
  • One-to-one guidance from staff experienced in supporting EPQ students
  •  Opportunities to explore the University's Highfield campus and talk to current students
  • A welcoming and inclusive environment with opportunities to share ideas with other students
  •  Lunch and refreshments are included on the day

By the end of the retreat, you will have made meaningful progress on your EPQ and have a clear plan for your next steps.

Where is the EPQ Retreat 2026 taking place?

The EPQ Retreat will take place on our Highfield Campus: University Road, Southampton, Hampshire SO17 1BJ

What was the EPQ Retreat like in 2025?

The day also included a student finance talk, a campus tour led by current University of Southampton students and opportunities to ask questions about university life. The retreat received high praise, with students reporting improved confidence, focus and sense of direction with their projects.
