The University of Southampton
Shine Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff Network

Shine BAME Staff Network

The Shine Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff Network aims to:

- To raise awareness of race equality and cultural diversity at University of Southampton
- To help develop practical solutions to address issues of underrepresentation
- To represent the views of black and minority ethnic staff and act as a body of expertise on ethnic minority issues and race discrimination
- To advise senior management on how to promote an inclusive culture for black and minority ethnic staff at University of Southampton
- To provide opportunities for social and professional networking among group members
- Be a safe point of contact for BAME staff

The network will achieve this by:

Involvement and consultation on the university’s plans, strategies, policies and guidance
Acting as a channel for communication between BAME staff and senior management
Co-ordinating events and activities which celebrate diversity and BAME identities at University of Southampton in conjunction with the Diversity team
Supporting and monitoring the implementation of the university’s race equality action plan and single equality strategy
Communicate regularly with the University of Southampton’s BAME community via a mailing list and Facebook group
Facilitating mentorship and information sharing between members

Membership

Membership of the group is open to any member who self-identifies as Black or Minority Ethnic (including international staff). However, it is important that the group contains a good balance of academic and support staff at all grades and representation of men and women from different ethnic groups.

The Network aims to meet once a month either for a business, social meeting or for lunch. Everyone is welcome to attend.
