Lipi is Lecturer and Pathway Leader of MA Fashion Management at the Winchester Centre for Global Futures in Art, Design & Media, Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.


Lipi graduated in Management from the Manchester Business School and was awarded her doctorate in Fashion Management and Cultural Studies from the University of the Arts London. She has over ten years lecturing experience and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Formerly she has been subject leader in Fashion Marketing and Branding at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London and Senior MBA Marketing and Management lecturer at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She has consulted for fashion universities and industry across the UK, Bangladesh, Paraguay, Uzbekistan, India and China.

Lipi has industry experience in fashion retail, social enterprise and trend forecasting. Recently she was a consultant for the United Nations, Better Work in Textiles and Garments project for the Bangladesh Ready-made Garment Sector. She is fashion, textiles and design advisor for projects supporting the development of the South Asian creative industries.

Lipi is passionate about curriculum innovation, inclusive education and multi-disciplinary research-led teaching and recently obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication. She was selected for the university SETsquared Researcher to Innovator Accelerator Programme and was awarded 2016 winner for the University’s annual Sustainability Action Awards that celebrates inspiring sustainability initiatives across the university.







Research interests

Lipi’s research examines multidisciplinary approaches to contemporary fashion; she is particularly interested in South Asia and its diaspora. Her PhD research deconstructed the power and postcolonial meanings of lingerie for urban Indian women living in India.

She is co-editor of the forthcoming book: South Asian Youth Cultures: Fashion Media and Society (IB Tauris).

Lipi is an accredited Postgraduate Research Degrees Supervisor (SEDA) and welcomes enquiries from students interested in PhDs exploring multidisciplinary approaches to dress cultures and fashion marketing and management research.

She is interested in research intersecting with: popular culture; gender and sexuality; critical marketing; postcolonial theory; cross-cultural consumption; social enterprise; leadership; strategic marketing and inclusive education.
