Whether you are a new student or staff member, you have access to a range of IT software, services and support throughout your work and studies.
New students set up their university IT account as part of the enrolment process, whilst new staff members receive details on how to set up their account through Human Resources.
Staff and students receive a university IT account to access essential systems and services. Once set up, it may take up to 24 hours for services to become fully available, including email, ID number and enrolment services.
You will be given a university username and email address, ending “@soton.ac.uk”.
It’s essential to set up a secondary email address on your IT account, as you can use this to reset your password if you forget it. To set this up or update your account details, visit Subscribe.
As part of setting up your IT account, you will be prompted to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an additional layer of security, verifying your identity when logging into your university IT account.
You can set up MFA through the Microsoft Authenticator app (recommended), receiving a text message, or a phone call. Ensure you have at least two MFA methods set up to verify your identity, as this means you will still be able to log into your IT account if you can’t access one of your methods.
For more information, visit the following article: ‘How to set up and manage Microsoft MFA’
Microsoft 365 (M365) is available to all students and staff for free, this includes email, file storage and collaborating via chat and video.
Staff have access to M365 apps on their university managed devices and students can download M365 to their personal devices. Students – if you already have a M365 licence, please don’t uninstall it! When on campus, visit our Tech Hubs to discuss the best options for you.
Blackboard is the university's virtual learning environment (VLE), providing access to course materials and online lectures. Many lecturers will regularly update content on Blackboard and use it as a way of communicating to students.
