Biography

Background

James is a medical doctor and public health registrar. Before medicine he worked as a corporate sustainability consultant advising global companies on sustainability and was involved in writing some of the world's first 'Net Positive' strategies. Since joining the world of medicine he has worked with organisations including Mount Sinai Icahn School of Public Health, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Public Health England on various climate and health projects.

Teaching

James works with the population and planetary health education team on integrating planetary health and sustainability topics into the medical curriculum at the University of Southampton.

He is the international lead for the International Medical Education Collaboration for Climate and Sustainability and is a working group chair with the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education.

James also acts as a faculty advisor for the Students for Planetary Health group at the University of Southampton and support students undertaking sustainability or planetary health related projects. He is always keen to hear from students with interests in this area.

Research Interests

James has research interests in both planetary health education and infectious disease. In 2021 he led the CAST in MedEd study, a review of UK medical school teaching on climate change and planetary health education.

Southampton Medical School Achievements

In 2023 the Southampton Medical School was one of only four medical schools globally that achieved an 'A grade' for its curriculum in the planetary health report card.
