Arrival

Arriving at University is an exciting and busy time with a lot to take in.

Our induction programme is designed to help you settle in as quickly as possible, with help or advice available whenever you need it. For most students, 'arrival' means getting to your halls of residence a week or so before the start of the teaching year.

Preparation

There are some things that you may need to do before you arrive; the University has produced a checklist to help you make your preparations.

The checklist also highlights some actions to follow up when you arrive, during the induction week before the academic year begins (also known as 'Freshers’ Week'). This includes welcome events and introductions from your academic unit and the Students' Union, plus a choice of other, decidedly non-academic activities. To help find your way around, it is worth investing in a Southampton street map.

The following is an example timetable for first year UK students:

  • We expect you to be in residence by Monday of the week before term.
  • Freshers’ Week starts Wednesday of the week before term.
  • You will have a chance to meet your lecturers and academic advisor, and pick up your timetable on Thursday of the week before term.
  • First lecture or class (autumn term) is on Monday of the first week of term.
