The Economics Division at Southampton has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching

We have been recognised for producing internationally excellent research in all the research assessment exercises (RAEs) since they began in 1992.

We have a thriving postgraduate community, attracting a wide range of students from very diverse backgrounds. Our staff are leading international researchers in their fields. They publish in the top academic journals and have advisory roles with governments, international public institutions and the private sector.

We have one of the largest and most active macroeconomics groups in the UK and a long-standing reputation for strength in microeconomics and econometric theory. Our Labour and Development Group is at the forefront of empirical work in the area.

Our graduate programmes are designed to provide the highest quality learning experience. Research and vocational training are of an excellent standard, with our research training programmes recognised by the ESRC. We received a maximum score in the last official teaching assessment, while in a recent survey of our postgraduate students, over three-quarters rated our teaching as good or very good and over 90 per cent said they would recommend Southampton to a friend or relative.

Global partnerships

We have strategic partnerships with government departments and agencies worldwide.

Studying as part of our community

Working towards a PhD can be challenging, but joining our friendly community of research students offers an inspirational and supportive environment.

“I am very happy about the frequency of meetings with my supervisors. We usually meet once a week and through a constant exchange of ideas I feel that my research is improving steadily.”

Mauro Testaverde, MSc Economics and Econometrics, PhD in economics
