Dr Louise du Toit is Lecturer in Law at Southampton Law School. Louise’s research focuses on strengthening environmental law and governance in response to current earth system challenges, including climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, and plastics. She currently coordinates undergraduate student prizes at Southampton Law School.

Current research
Concerned by the failure of environmental law to respond to current earth system challenges such as climate change and plastics, and the associated injustices that have arisen, Louise’s research considers how environmental law and governance could be strengthened to respond to such challenges. Her research has delved into earth system science, sustainable development, climate justice, and climate litigation, and her research (past and forthcoming) has been published in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
Louise is the co-editor of a (loose-leaf) reference work on environmental law in South Africa and is Visiting Fellow at the Lincoln Centre for Ecological Justice at the University of Lincoln.

Louise teaches on the Public Law 2: Administrative Justice, Remedies in Contract and Tort, and International Environmental Law modules.

Biography
Before joining Southampton Law School, Louise held postdoctoral fellowship positions in South Africa, where she undertook research on global ecological law in the Anthropocene (North-West University) and on climate change mitigation in the insurance industry (University of Cape Town). She holds a PhD in Public Law and an LLM in Environmental Law (with distinction) from the University Cape Town. Louise has also been admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
