Would you like to study for a Psychology BSc (Hons) degree in Southampton? Have you grown up in another country, perhaps even another continent, with a different education system? If the answer to both questions is 'Yes', then the International Foundation year may be perfect for you.
The International Foundation Year has been designed specially for students like yourself who:
- have achieved high grades at school or college in their own country (or are mature students with suitable experience)
- want to study at a UK university, but need a year to adapt to the UK higher educational system
- do not yet have the required standard of English language for direct entry onto an undergraduate programme
- are expecting to study Psychology - or another subject in the general area of Law, Management and Social Sciences - at degree level.
You can see more details abut the year, including how to apply, here. You will need to tell us in your application which subject you hope to study at degree level.
Fees and funding
For fees and funding purposes, the foundation year is generally classed as part of a degree course lasting 4 years in total. (It is not a standalone qualification.) The annual tuition fee is identical. You can find out more here.
Other options for language support
If you have had some experience of living in the UK already, or perhaps come from a country in continental Europe, you may still need to reach a higher level level of English language to help you succeed on a degree course.
You may like to consider a shorter, language-intensive course, through the University's Centre for Language Studies, which is a member of The British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP). It can provide a choice of English language classes to suit your needs, typically ranging from 4 to 18 weeks. Accommodation can usually be provided within the tuition fee.
Fluent speakers of English
You may be based either in the UK or elsewhere, fluent in English, but do not yet have A level or equivalent qualifications. Here, we recommend that you build up your subject knowledge and study skills with a qualification from your local Further Education college, or suitable Open University modules. The Psychology Undergraduate Admissions team will be able to advise you.
If you have any general queries about English language requirements, contact the University's International Office, tel +44 (0)23 8059 2772 (EU), or +44(0)23 8059 9699 (other countries).
If you have a question about the International Foundation Year course, contact the International Foundation Year Office, tel +44 (0) 23 8059 2663.
