Foundation Years

We offer Foundation Years for students who are not eligible for direct entry into our undergraduate degrees.

A foundation year may be the option for you if you do not already meet the entry requirements for your course. Our three different foundation years can each give you a route into several different subjects.

Our language course may be suitable if you are an international student wanting to improve your English Language skills either to meet entry requirements or for using English at a higher level in academic study.

Law, Arts, Humanities, Management and Social Sciences Foundation Year

The Law, Arts, Humanities, Management and Social Sciences Foundation Year is also known as the International Foundation Year.

If you are a student from outside of the United Kingdom and want study an undergraduate degree in law, arts, humanities, management or social sciences, this foundation year will give automatic progression to your chosen undergraduate degree.

After the foundation year you can study on a three year undergraduate degree or a four year masters degree.

  • learn the specialised English language and study skills needed for an undergraduate degree programme
  • study topics relevant to your chosen undergraduate degree
  • complete just one application to the University
  • You will be granted a four year visa which includes the foundation year (one year) and an undergraduate degree (three years)
  • You will be taught by supportive and friendly staff, including a personal academic adviser and supported by our dedicated foundation year team
  • You will be eligible for University accommodation
  • our foundation year award is recognised in other institutions

Science Foundation Year

The Science Foundation Year is suitable if you wish to study a science discipline but do not meet the entry requirements for your chosen degree. You can study on the Science Foundation Year as the start of a four year Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a five year Master of Science, Chemistry or Environmental Science (MSc, MChem or MEnvSci) degree.

Successful completion of the Science Foundation Year guarantees progression to our degree programmes.

This Foundation Year may suit you if you are studying for A levels in subjects different from the subjects required by the entry requirements of our science degrees. It may also interest you if you are a mature applicant, with skills and experience from employment, or if you come from a part of the world where the education system is different from the British A level system.

Engineering, Physics, Geophysics Foundation Year

This Foundation Year is a route onto our Engineering, Physics and Geophysics degree programmes. This Foundation Year will be suitable if you do not yet meet the entry requirements in mathematics and physics.

The Engineering, Physics and Geophysics Foundation Year forms the initial year of a four year Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a five year Master of Engineering or Physics (MEng or MPhys).

This programme is suitable for students who are studying A levels in subjects different to those normally required for an engineering, physics or geophysics degree, as well as mature applicants with skills and experience from employment. The programme is also suitable for international students from parts of the world where the education system differs from that of the British A level system.

Pre–Sessional English Language Course

If you need to improve your English language skills as a condition of entry to the University of Southampton this course will be suitable. Our Pre–Sessional English Language Course is also suitable if you have already met the English language entry requirements for the University but want to find out more about the use of English in academic study and the expectations of academic life in the UK.

To apply for our Pre–Sessional English Language Course you will need an English Language level of IELTS 5.0 with at least 5.0 in each skill, or equivalent.
