Year in Employment Placements

Year in Employment Placements are an opportunity for organisations to attract our high-calibre students on placement for up to 12 months as part of their degree.

How could it benefit you?

Appointing a placement student from the University of Southampton will provide your organisation with benefits such as:

I completed a placement year myself so I really understand the value in it for a student. The hands-on work experience cannot compare to studies as it requires completely different skill sets. I can’t recommend it enough. I also couldn’t be happier with our current University of Southampton placement student.

What organisations do we work with?

We seek placements from all business sectors and sizes. Whether you’re a small start-up looking to hire your first placement student or an experienced recruiter looking to fill numerous roles, we have the expertise to support you throughout the placement process.

Role Criteria

In order for a placement to be eligible for the Year in Employment, it must:

  • Last up to 12 months
  • Provide our students with the opportunity to fulfil our Learning Outcomes
  • Satisfy our health and safety requirements

If you would like to promote a placement to our students, please upload your vacancy to our MyCareer Jobs Board. This is the most effective way to promote your opportunity to our students. Registration is free. Please see our vacancy policy and MyCareer Employer Guide for further details. Our MyCareer Privacy Notice outlines how we collect and process your data when you access MyCareer as an employer.

We would be more than happy to speak with you if you wish to discuss your placement opportunity with us and the ways in which we can help you. If you are new to placements, please also read our Placement Provider Handbook for further information.

Once a placement has been approved and the student starts with you, we ask that you:

  • Provide a suitable induction to the student
  • Allow us to hold a check-in call with the student following the induction
  • Consider participating in our visit around 3 months into the placement
  • Consider participating in our remote contact around 3 months before the end of the placement
  • Contact us if you have any concerns or updates regarding the student

We can support you before, during and after the placement in numerous ways including:

  • Promoting your vacancy to our students
  • Providing a point of contact throughout the placement
  • Signposting to further opportunities for engaging with the University

For organisations new to placements, please read our Placement Provider Handbook.
