Patients’ positivity in the face of adversity continually inspires me

My background is in Psychology having earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology in 1992 from the University of Southampton and I became a Chartered Health Psychologist in 2002. My role as Research Assistant at the University of Plymouth for an MRC-funded project looking at novel approaches to quality of life assessment allowed me to develop my interest in Health Psychology. I also took on the role of part-time lecturer at the University of Plymouth and in 2002 I completed my PhD looking at the Positive Consequences of Illness. I have developed several quality of life measurement tools including the Silver Lining Questionnaire which was developed as part of my PhD. I started my research work at the University of Southampton in 2012. My current role as study co-ordinator for the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group Funded Projects involves the development of measures to assess health-related quality of life for people with cancer; specifically I am working with adolescents and young adults with cancer as well as people with anal cancer. I am also working within the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group preparing reports for the Colorectal Wellbeing (CREW) Study.
