Alan graduated from the University of Southampton with a BSc in Physiology & Biochemistry in 1979, joining the Faculty of Medicine in a research assistant role the same year. Commencing part-time doctoral studies in 1983, supervised by Professor Anthony Postle, he gained his PhD in the Faculty in 1987, with a research expertise in lipid biochemistry/enzymology/metabolism. Since then, he has established International as well as Pharma, National and Cross-Faculty collaborative links in diverse areas of lipid metabolism from biomedicine to biophysics and to the basic biochemistry of coral reefs and the impacts of climate change. He has a broad teaching portfolio that spans many areas of the early years curriculum of the BM courses in Southampton. He is currently the Deputy Year 2 Lead for the BM5/BM6/BMEU program.
