Pía Riggirozzi is Associate Professor in Global Politics at the University of Southampton, where she has worked since 2009.

At Southampton, Pía is a member of the Centre for Citizenship, Globalization and Governance (Southampton.ac.uk/C2G2). In 2006 Pía was awarded a PhD University of Warwick, Department of Politics and International Studies. Before, she obtained degrees from the University of Miami, School of International Studies, Florida, USA (MSc, 2001) ; FLACSO/ Argentina (MSc, 1997) and the Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina (BA International Relations, 1995).

In 2007 I was awarded an ESRC Post-Doctoral Fellowship (based at the University of Sheffield) which allowed me to focus on my single-authored book, ‘Advancing Governance in the South: What Roles for International Financial Institutions in Developing States?’ (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2009). I am (Hon) Research Fellow at the Political Economy Research Centre (PERC) in the Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield. Before coming to Southampton I worked at the University of Sheffield as Research Fellow for an ESRC funded project on Crisis and Post-Neoliberal Governance in South America.

My research has been published in journals including New Political Economy, Economy and Society, Development and Change, and Review of International Studies. I am currently engaged in a collaborative ESRC-DfID funded project titled ‘Poverty Reduction and Regional Integration: SADC and Unasur Health Policies’ that explores regional integration processes and poverty reduction in the South.

Research interests

Global Governance and International Institutions, political economy of development, global and regional governance for development, power relations and policy processes involving international organisations and developing countries. I have a regional interest in the political economy of the Americas although I have also worked on comparative political economy.

Work in progress

I am currently working on regionalism in Latin America. I attempt to re-examine the various agreements, dynamics and constellations of actors, interests and power resources in the search for governance after neoliberalism, devoting particular attention to how new governance arrangements engage with democracy, inclusion, and the articulation of alternative forms of regional governance. I am also working on 'neo-developmentalism' as a political and economic development approach in Latin America, and on a research proposal for a future bid on regionalism and the provisions for social development in Latin America. I am interested in the emerging institutions and funding supporting regional social policies in the fields of education, health and employment as they are giving new momentum to regional organisations such as the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR) and new, more radical, regionalist projects, such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA). This is not only interesting in terms of Inter-American relations but also in terms of inter-regionalism as the EU is increasingly becoming a broker of a more 'humane' regionalism advancing social cohesion goals. My intention is then to explore theoretically and empirically two inter-related yet under-explored issues: the linkages between economic integration and social development; and the significance of EU-Latin American inter-regional agreements for social policy and social development.

Research supervision

I am happy to supervise students in the areas of Latin America Political Economy, development, and regionalism, and more specifically in relation to the research interests listed on my profile. Please contact me if you want to discuss a proposal for postgraduate research.
