Research areas

Our portfolio spans the IoT system stack, from underpinning hardware to sophisticated data management and analysis techniques. We categorise our research in these thematic areas:

  • Sensor technologies: Research into new and novel sensor devices to enable new innovative applications
  • Data management: Analysis and Interfacing: Accessing and making sense of the wealth of data obtained from the IoT
  • Powering the IoT: Increasing the sustainability or autonomy of IoT devices through improved management and efficiency and/or self-powered approaches
  • Security, safety and privacy: Enabling a secure and trusted IoT, from hardware through to software
  • Communications and networking: 5G communication and efficient networking to support future systems
  • Information processing and machine intelligence: Decision making and autonomy
  • Nanotechnology and system-on-chip: Enabling faster, cheaper and/or lower-power computation

Application domains

We apply our IoT research to the following application domains:

  • Health and well-being: Improving quality of life through effective technologies for health care and well-being
  • Environmental monitoring: Improving our understanding of the environment around us through remote monitoring
  • Smarter homes, cities and infrastructure: Increasing connectivity and intelligence in homes, buildings, cities and infrastructure to improve services, sustainability, and quality of life
  • Industry 4.0: Improving industrial processes through improved awareness, intelligence and connectivity, from machine condition monitoring to smart farming
