We offer a selection of full- and part-time taught courses and research programmes

Social Sciences at the University of Southampton has a tradition of first-class teaching and research. Our research was given excellent ratings in the 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE).

Across Social Sciences, more than 50 per cent of our research was judged to be either 'internationally excellent' (3*) or 'world-leading' (4*). All of our units of assessment improved on their performance in the previous RAE (2001). Three out of five units of assessment were ranked highly in their subject group, according to their grade point average: Social Policy (which includes sociology, demography and gerontology) ranked third; Statistics and Operational Research ranked ninth; and Economics and Econometrics ranked eleventh. Both Politics & International Relations and Social Work Studies consolidated their positions, with at least one-third of research judged to be 'internationally excellent' or better.
