Biography
My first degree was in geography. I was then a PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield, where I obtained my PhD in 1985. I subsequently spent two years as a temporary Lecturer at Oxford University before moving to the Centre for Population Studies at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After a brief spell as a Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at Birkbeck College, London, I moved to Southampton in 1989, and I have been here ever since.
Research interests
My research interests fall into two areas:
- Various aspects of the demography of developing countries, especially recent fertility changes (though in the years from 2010 onwards I shall mainly participate in this research through editorial work on journals and the supervision of PhD students).
- Historical demography of England between (about) 1800 and 1950.
I also supervise or co-supervise three PhD students. I am the School Postgraduate Research Students' Co-ordinator. I am the University of Southampton's representative on the Scientific Board of the European PhD in Socio-economic and Statistical Studies. I am currently a member of the Scientific Review Board of the on-line journal Demographic Research, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biosocial Science, and a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Local Population Studies.
Research Grants
Was co-investigator on ESRC-funded research project on 'The health and morbidity of friendly society members in the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries', March 2007 - Mayy 2009 (principal investigator Prof. Bernard Harris, Division of Sociology and Social Policy, other co-investigator Dr Martin Gorsky, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine).
Teaching activities
DEMO3001 and DEMO6014 - Demography (this is a unit run primarily for students on programmes involving Actuarial Studies).
DEMO1002 - The Population History of England (this is for everyone).
STAT2009 - Research Methods for the Social Sciences.
