Biography
Derek McGhee joined the Division in January 2000. He studied for his first degree in the Department of Sociology at the University of Plymouth, and then completed an MA in Cultural Studies and a PhD in Sociology at Lancaster University. His teaching interests reflect his research interests and also encompass criminology. He is the author of three research monographs Homosexuality, Law & Resistance, (Routledge 2001) and Intolerant Britain? Hate, Citizenship & Difference (Open University Press 2005). Research interests
Derek McGhee's most recent research examines community cohesion, counter terrorism and human rights. His latest book The End of Multiculturalism? Terrorism, Integration & Human Rights, was published May 2008 (Open University Press) this book examines anti-terrorism legislation in general with a particular focus on the impact on the deportation of terror suspects & on Muslim communities, as well as the introduction of unnacceptable behaviour measures in the Terrorism Act of 2006; the development of 'broader' community-based counter-terrorism strategies in the UK; the relationship between community cohesion, integration and multiculturalism in contemporary public policy; the threat to and promotion of a human rights culture in the UK; as well as a critical engagement with new 'Britishness' discourses in the UK. Derek McGhee is currently writing a number of papers on the: (1) the recommendations made by the Commission on Integration and Community Cohesion, (2) Deportation and the right to have rights, (3)rights and duties - security and liberty; and, (4) an article based on research conducted with Bhopal and Myer on the Secondary Education and Gypsy Traveller Pupils (Funded by West Sussex County Council).
Teaching activities
Derek McGhee usually teaches in year 1, 2 and 3 on our undergraduate programmes. He convenes the following units: SOCI2006: Crime and Society and he convenes the single unit SOCI3010: Crime, Space and Social Control and its co-requisite (project unit)SOCI3043.
Derek McGhee also teaches on PGT units and supervizes and 6 MPhil/PhD students.
Work in progress
As well as working on a range of different journal articles and book chapters, Derek McGhee is currently working on a new book, which will be published by Palgrave MacMillan. The working title of this book is: Security, Citizenship & Human Rights - Shared Values in Uncertain Times This book will examine security, identity and citizenship through a number of case studies: the securitization and desecuritization of human rights; the relationship between the 'earned citizenship' proposals and the managed migration points system; the relationship between PREVENT (counter-terrorism 'community' policing) and Britain's new Border control systems; and the debates on rights, responsibilities and citizenship in the potential British Bill of Rights (and Responsibilities). The manuscript for this book has been submitted (Dec 2009). Derek's recent research interest include working on articles on moderate secularism, religious identities in the public sphere. RECENT RESEARCH GRANTS: ESRC Centre for Population Change, project with Prof Sue Heath and Prof Allan Findlay, Research family and household transitions amongst new European migrants in England and Scotland. Exploration of the work of the Traveller Education Service in West Sussex (with Dr Kalwant Bhopal and Martin Myer): Funder: West Sussex Council. Evaluating London Probation's gang and hate crime training (with Dr Rosie Meek). Funder: London probation. Exploration of the economic impact of new EU migration on Southampton (with Dr Pauline Leonard). Funder: The Improvement and Development Agency. Consultancy: I am the academic consultant on London Probation's Diversity and Prejudice toolkit. Funder: London Probation.
