Biography

I returned to Southampton in 1999, having completed my PhD here two years earlier. In between times I worked in the Department of Government at the University of Strathclyde. My first degree is in Chemistry, my Masters in Environmental Science. It’s a long story! I was promoted to Professor in 2007 and have been Head of Division since 2009. For five months from Feb 2010 I was a Senior Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

Research interests

I have three broad areas of interest:

- Democratic theory and practice

- Environmental politics

- Social economy / third sector

Much of my current work focuses on democratic innovations – institutions designed to increase and deepen citizen participation in the political decision-making process. This work builds on my recent book Democratic Innovations: Designing Institutions for Citizen Participation (Cambridge University Press: 2009).

Currently I am Principal Investigator (with Dr Milena Buechs, SSP) for the project ‘The Third Sector and the Environment’, part of the ESRC/OTS Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) programme of research. The project is focusing on environmental performance management and behaviour change interventions across the third sector. www.tsrc.ac.uk

I have recently completed research for the ESRC Venture project ‘Rediscovering the Civic’ for which I directed experimental research on internet discussion forums. www.civicbehaviour.org.uk

PhD Supervision

I am happy to supervise students in areas related to my research interests.

I am currently supervising postgraduates in areas including: 'comparative analysis of democratic innovations'; 'sustainability and social justice'; 'policy making and online engagement'; 'the evolution of UK volunteering policy'.

Please feel free to contact me with proposals.
