Biography
I joined Southampton in 2002 following six years as head of research in the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre, Florence. Prior to that, I was Professor of Economics at the European University Institute and at Queen Mary, University of London. I did my PhD at LSE and was then Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford.
Research interests
My current interests are in four areas: (a) poverty, inequality and the measurement of living standards, (b) labour market flows and behaviour, (c) educational achievement and social segregation in schools, and (d) charitable donations, especially for development.
Unicef Output
Much of my work at UNICEF compared living standards across OECD members and across the transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Click here for details of published reports. (See below for my academic publications.) You can download comparisons of OECD countries' records on child poverty, child injury death, teenage pregnancy, and educational disadvantage, and a review of social conditions after a decade of transition in the CEE/FSU countries.
Work in progress
See under 'Working Papers' for my most recent output. This includes work from an ESRC grant for 2006-8 on charitable giving for international development which forms part of the ESRC Non-Governmental Public Action programme.
Roles
Professor of Social Statistics, Deputy Director of S3RI
