Biography

After studying at the Free University of Berlin (Diploma/MA in Sociology, 1990) and at the University of Connecticut (Ph.D. in Sociology, 1997), Silke did research and taught at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Connecticut, the Bauhaus University Weimar (1997-1999), and the University of Pennsylvania (2000-2005).

Research interests

Employing qualitative and quantitative methods, Silke pursues her overall research agenda on understanding the intersection of individual and social change through studying biographical and organizational processes. The combination of social psychology and macro-social political approaches has distinguished and will continue to distinguish her approach to social movements, cultural events, and work organizations in diverse contexts. Silke finds biographical methods particularly useful for connecting micro-, meso-, and macro-levels of analysis.

Her past projects include research on voluntary activity in the male life course, organizational barriers and incentives to political and social participation among women (Case-Study of the Coalition of Labor Union Women), urban renewal processes in a case-study of the event Cultural Capital of Europe 1999, and the influence of transnational organizations on national law making with respect to the introduction of Gender Mainstreaming in Germany and in the new EU members states.

Her recent publications include Transnational Careers: Biographies, Life-conduct and Identities [in German], co-edited with Florian Kreutzer (Wiesbaden: VS Verlag, 2006) and NGOs between crisis prevention and security politics [in German], co-edited with Ansgar Klein (Wiesbaden: VS Verlag 2007). She is editor of Gender Politics in the Expanding European Union. Mobilization, Inclusion, Exclusion (Berghahn Books 2008).

Work in progress

Her research project "Passionate professionals. Biographies and careers of aid workers" combines a life-history perspective on personal, political, and professional developments in humanitarian assistance with a study of the increasing importance of transnational organizations.

Roles
