Biography

I took a BA in psychology at the University of Liverpool before undertaking graduate work, also in psychology, at the London School of Economics. I took up a Chair in Research Methods in the Division of Social Statistics at Southampton in May 2008. Prior to that, I spent seven years in the department of sociology at the University of Surrey and three years in the Survey Methods Centre at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen).

Research interests

My research interests are in the areas of public opinion and political behaviour, particularly with regard to social and political trust and social capital. I also have interests in processes of inter and intra-generational social mobility and public attitudes towards and engagement with science and technology. Methodologically, my interests are in the areas of survey methodology and statistical modelling, with a particular focus on structural equation models and models for the analysis of repeated measures data. I am Director of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods and co-director of the ESRC Survey Resources Network. I am Principal Investigator on the Wellcome Monitor of Public Attitudes, Knowledge, and Engagement in Biomedical Science and Chair of the Methodological Advisory Committee for the Understanding Society survey.
