Empowering you to fulfil your potential
Wherever you are in the world, the integrated range of programmes and short courses in audiology at the University of Southampton offers you distinctive opportunities to achieve your aspirations
Embark on undergraduate pre-registration training (UK/EU residents only)
You might be new to audiology or working as a Band-4 associate audiologist. Either way, our new BSc (Hons) Audiology programme offers you the best foundation on which to develop your career as a registered audiologist.
See our other page including information about pre-registration training for UK audiologists.
Accelerate your career with the MSc Audiology
Qualified audiologists from within the UK or beyond can apply for the MSc Audiology programme. From 2011/12, we will be offerring a restructured programme that will suit the needs of postgraduate students:
- Undertaking clinical scientist training (within the Modernising Scientific Careers framework)
- Wanting to take the programme in one year (UK, EU and international students)
We attract graduate audiologists and UK audiologists who have taken alternative training routes (i.e. the "BAAT" route). For UK audiologists, applicants are usually in Band 5 or 6. We also attract students from all over the world, from Canada to China and Jamaica to Malaysia.
The MSc Audiology programme at Southampton provides excellent opportunities to build on the knowledge and skills you acquired through undergraduate study and subsequent experience. Distinctive features of our MSc Audiology programme are the use of problem-based learning in semester 2, to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, collaborative-working and reflective skills, and the in-depth research project.
At Southampton, undertaking the MSc as a graduate from the BSc Audiology (i.e. band 5-6) makes sense, because the learning outcomes and learning activities are distinct from the BSc. With the restructured programme, we will provide greater flexibility to those students with approved BSc Audiology degrees. Taking the MSc Audiology full-time is also the most efficient way of progressing through the Higher Training Scheme, en route to registration as a clinical scientist.

Expand your expertise with our short courses
We offer a range of short courses that provide you with opportunities to build on your knowledge, expertise and experience. These include various Master's-level modules in audiology, biomedical signal processing and cochlear implant processing. These modules are particularly appropriate for audiologists and clinical scientists (i.e. band 5-8)
Our individual Master's-level modules are accredited with the Higher Training Scheme. Furthermore, more courses are under-development (including a Master's-level module in signal processing in hearing aids), so watch this space!
Discover and innovate with research degrees
The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research is world-renowned for research training. Whether you aspire to a career in research (e.g. fundamental or clinical research) or want to develop your research activities alongside clinical duities, we offer several programmes that will enable you to develop the necessary skills.
We have a large and dynamic MPhil/PhD programme, with students working on a range of fundamental, translational and clinical research projects. We accept students from far and wide and from various backgrounds. Current MPhil/PhD students include new graduates from the BSc Audiology (i.e. band 5-6), graduates from BSc Audiology programmes around the world, clinical scientists and graduates from various science disciplines.
The Doctorate in Clinical Practice provides an alternative to the PhD if you aspire to high-level clinical leadership alongside innovative clinical research (see below). Two-thirds of the programme consists of clinical research to PhD level, albeit slightly smaller in scope.
As of October 2008, we are offering a new research degree, in colloboration with the School of Health Sciences. The MRes in Clinical Research combines a taught component, a placement in a research group and an in-depth research project. The progamme is specifically tailored to meet the needs of those looking to study part-time. The aim of the programme is to enable you to learn how to put research into practice and to provide a robust evidence base for clinical decisions and interventions. This programme is particularly relevant to clinical scientists (band 7-9) who want to build on the research training provided by the MSc Audiology in a clinical context.
Aspire to leadership roles
If you aspire to lead audiology services and develop new, innovative services, as well as conduct clinical research to evaluate these services, the Doctorate in Clinical Practice will help you develop the necessary skills. This programme is particularly well-suited to clinical scientists (band 7-9), and it contributes to your development to consultant level. Another route towards becoming consultant audiologist is through a PhD.
You may have aspirations to lead research at a research institute, at a university or in clinical context. In which case, we offer robust and exciting research training to PhD level.
