*** Important news about BSc and MSc audiology ***
4th March 2010 - BSc Audiology 2010 update
Virtually all decisions on BSc Audiology places have been made. This was on the basis of 20 (as opposed to 15) places, as we've managed to secure funding for an additional 5. Woohoo! Good news for once.
We also want to reassure those you have been offered a place that it will be business as normal. There is absolutely no risk of finding yourself on a BSc Healthcare Science degree. Similarly, placements will be as usual.
We would like to thank all applicants for their patience and support during this awkward time. We wish you all the very best with upcoming exams etc.
No news on government's plans other than the new BSc won't start until 2011, we are told. Where it will start and how it will be funded is currently anyone's guess!
17th Feb 2010 - BSc Audiology 2010 places
All places on the 2010 entry BSc Audiology course have now been filled. We will not be considering any new 2010 applications received after the 22nd January UCAS deadline. We will not be considering any deferred entry applications to 2011 entry.
17th Feb 2010 - MSc and PG Diploma 2010 places
All places on the 2010 entry MSc and PG Dip Audiology course have now been filled.
We will not be considering any new 2010 applications for either course.
We will not be considering any deferred entry applications to 2011 entry; the opening date for 2011 applications in Autumn 2010 will be posted on this website later in the year.
13th Jan 2010 - Cut in places for BSc in 2010
It is with much disappointment that our intake in October 2010 has been reduced to 15 by a cut in our normal NHS funding. This cut was confirmed only last week. We are working hard to secure alternative funding to hopefully increase this to approximately 20. Students already on the BSc Audiology are unaffected. All applicants for the BSc Audiology for 2010 who may be affected by the implications of this have been contacted or will be contacted shortly to explain the situation in more depth.
This cut is related to government changes to the training of 'healthcare science' disciplines, including audiology (see News from 3rd Dec).
We remain unclear about the government's proposals for audiology training in the future but will update you here when we have reliable information to offer you.
3rd Dec 2009 - Future of BSc
The government have recently released proposals to replace the BSc Audiology (nationally) with a shorter, multi-disciplinary BSc (including vision, neurophysiology and audiology). This will be funded by HEFCE and students will therefore pay tuition fees. The government wants the new degree to start October 2010.
We share the concerns expressed recently by various professional groups that the new degree, as the proposals currently stand, will not provide sufficient training to permit graduates to operate at the same level as graduates from the BSc Audiology. Extra, structured and funded training would be needed, in our view. It would therefore not be an appropriate alternative to the BSc Audiology although there is perhaps some merit in running it alongside the BSc Audiology.
It is likely that, if the BSc Audiology is withdrawn, so will the PG Diploma.
Implications for applicants and students:
- Current students already enrolled on either programme will be unaffected
- We have been advised that we will have funded places for BSc Audiology for 2010 and so we are accepting applications and making offers for 2010 as normal (at least until mid-January 2010). Please keep applying but apply sooner rather than later! This might be the last opportunity to access a dedicated audiology undergraduate degree.
- We are not currently accepting applications or deferals for 2011
The audiology profession is lobbying hard for the BSc Audiology to remain funded one way or another. We don't know yet exactly if (in the year of a General Election) and when the BSc Audiology degree will be withdrawn.
There are also plans afoot to change the MSc Audiology (not all bad). We await announcements.
