Have you ever wanted to study Arabic, Chinese or Japanese? Do you want to improve your French, German or Spanish? Does Portuguese, Italian or medieval (or classical) Latin attract you? Or maybe you'd like to start a language from scratch?

We offer a wide range of courses from beginners to final year degree level. Many of these are available to students and staff across the University, and the general public.

International Foundation Year

Our International Foundation Year prepares students for university degree programmes in Arts, Humanities, Law, Social Sciences and Management.

We run courses for students who want to improve their English and study skills:

English language support classes

Registered students at the University of Southampton who would like help with their English can attend the free   English language support courses provided throughout the academic year.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

If you need to take an IELTS test, we are an official testing centre and run tests at regular intervals. Get ready for IELTS! We also run a short intensive course to prepare you to take the IELTS examination.

Erasmus and other visiting students

Erasmus and other visiting students and students registered at the University of Southampton who would like to do English as part of their undergraduate degree programme can take our English language degree unit courses both as main and alternative subjects.

BA degree programmes

If you would like to study English language and British or European culture in more depth, we offer BA degree programmes in Contemporary Europe and Applied English Language Studies.

Postgraduate degree programmes

We offer several masters programmes which are organised to allow you to pursue an in depth single subject or to opt for a more interdisciplinary approach. All Southampton's MA programmes can be studied full-time or part-time.
