NPMS2034 Developing Midwifery Professional Profile

Module Overview

This module enables you to undertake professional development activity of your choice. This activity must be agreed/negotiated with your academic tutor/ programme lead to ensure it is: • in line with NMC educational guidelines for professional midwifery practice • covered by University and Faculty guidelines for elective /independent activity, including insurance and risk assessment • consistent with the educational commissioning of the programme • aligned with programme learning outcomes • appropriate to your professional development needs

Module Aims

To facilitate the development of personal and professional knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to midwifery practice, lifelong learning and compassionate health care professionals

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Evaluate your own learning style and needs to facilitate your development as a competent and compassionate midwife, and in partnership with the programme team identify and plan your engagement in an educational activity to meet these needs.
  • Review the evidence base appropriate to your identified development activity to justify your activity, developing specific self-directed learning objectives to support your learning.
  • Demonstrate the ability to take responsibility for your own lifelong learning, including consideration of risk assessment, access to variable resources, professional /legal requirements and professional multidisciplinary communication to achieve your activity.
  • Demonstrate the achievement of your learning objectives and the dissemination of this to others.
  • Reflect on, and evaluate your learning from the activity and discuss the extent to which it has helped you meet the module aim, and how it will inform your future midwifery practice and personal and professional development.

Special Features

The module can be achieved by a range of activities, that is likely to be from the following list but not exclusively: • Successful completion of a University of Southampton Curriculum Innovation Module appropriate to the role of a midwife • An agreed elective activity, for example: o Observation period within UK of a health and /or social care nature that is relevant to professional midwifery practice- e.g. social services, police, women support association o Observation period internationally of a health and /or social care nature that is relevant to professional midwifery practice- e.g. maternity service in another country • An Erasmus placement • A research experience; for example working with researcher undertaking clinically focused research that is likely to inform midwifery professional practice • A Clinical development activity for example working with Consultant /specialised practitioner in area outside programme activity, but of relevance to professional midwifery practice
