World economies and financial systems are never out of the news
Now, more than ever, we need to understand how the money markets work at a global and local level. Economists at Southampton are involved in examining many aspects of the complex web of financial transactions that control our lives.
Economics at Southampton at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is challenging and exciting. We are a young and truly international community of academics and students, proud of our vibrant and collegial environment.
We have a long history of research excellence, with each RAE placing us in the top 10 in the UK, while our teaching also receives consistently high scores. Our strengths lie in econometric and microeconomic theory, with macroeconomics and applied economics also extremely strong.
Our aim is to conduct high-quality, original research which has international impact and relevance for both the discipline and policymakers. With 16 nationalities represented in the group, our international composition ensures that findings are disseminated worldwide, with members contributing to conferences, seminars and institutions, government and non-governmental bodies, throughout the UK, Europe and the USA.
We are also committed to high-quality postgraduate teaching and training in research. We were recently awarded Doctoral Training Centre status by the ESRC and will use this to develop the number and quality of postgraduate students in our already thriving group. Many doctoral programme graduates are successful academics in universities in the UK and Europe.
DTC status creates PhD opportunites
Doctoral Training Centre status is enabling us to expand opportunities for high-quality PhD candidates.

We have active research and teaching collaborations with numerous institutions throughout Europe, the USA, Canada and Mexico.
World-leading research
We are proud of our reputation for cutting-edge research. In each of the research assessment exercises to date, we have been placed among the top ten UK universities for economics.
