Research degrees

As one of the top economics divisions in the UK, we are highly respected and recognised internationally in many fields. We offer an active and stimulating research environment in which our postgraduate research students play a crucial part.

We have approximately 30 full-time academic staff. Our PhD programme is small enough (between five and 10 new students admitted each year) to provide detailed PhD supervision but large enough to offer expertise in many fields. Supervision is offered in all the main areas of economics and econometrics.

Our programme provides a clearly structured taught and research based training. As a PhD student in Southampton you will be taught and supervised by academics who are internationally renowned experts in their fields. Students entering the PhD programme benefit from advanced training in economics and econometrics modules in the first year. In addition to these core units the Economics Department is also running different complementary field modules taught by internationally renowned experts visiting the department on a regular basis.

Our programme structure is motivated by the need to produce well rounded experts who have both a broad understanding of fundamental economic theory as well as a more narrowly focused expertise in their particular area of interest. This ensures that our graduates are able to gain excellent positions either in academia or in international organisations, government agencies, policy think tanks, financial institutions and the wider private sector.
