Engineering and the Environment

Civil and Environmental Engineering Degrees

  • Our Civil Engineering degree students gain first-hand experience of construction through our six-day residential Constructionarium field trip.
  • Civil Engineering students put theory into practice from day 1
  • A recent MEng Civil Engineering group design project involved the design of a mega tower for Doha in Qatar. The students tested their designs in the wind tunnel to look at the shape optimisation of the wind flows
  • Our Civil Engineering degree students are putting their knowledge into action to transform the lives of a village in Cameroon, Africa. The goal: to design, fund and construct development projects in the village of Bambouti
  • The Sydney Opera House: Scale model testing was carried out at the University of Southampton
  • We regard hands-on experience of the Civil Engineering topics that you will study to be vital in gaining an understanding of the practical issues involved
  • We have a specialist car simulator that offers a realistic driving environment that can be used to investigate driver behaviour
  • We worked with Telford and Wrekin Council to help stabilise a major landslide damaging a road running through the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site
  • Civil Engineering graduate Jane Wernick Jane has worked on projects including the Millennium Wheel, the Xstrata Tree Top Walkway in Kew Gardens, the Living Architecture Houses project as well as Stansted Airport, The Young Vic Theatre and BBC Scotland

How will the world cope with the effects of climate change in the future? How will we protect our coastlines from sea-level rises? How will we build the infrastructure that people need for travel? How can we respond to the tremendous growth of cities worldwide by providing better and more energy-efficient buildings? How can we do this without damaging the natural environment of our world? These are the questions that civil and environmental engineers of the future will have to answer.

Civil and environmental engineering involves the planning, design, development and construction of solutions that enable the built and natural environment to be used in a sustainable way. This covers many different fields, including structures (such as bridges, tunnels), transport (such as railways, motorways), hydraulics (such as river control, coastal defences) and identifying sustainable energy sources for the future.

The University of Southampton is one of the leading universities for Civil Engineering degrees and Environmental Engineering degrees, the Complete University Guide has ranked us 5th in the UK.

We offer three-year BEng and four-year MEng Civil Engineering degrees and Environmental Engineering degrees, together with specialist options including Architecture and a Year in Industry.

All our Civil Engineering degrees are accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Our four-year MEng programmes meet all the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Our three-year BEng programmes meet many of the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer although graduates must undertake postgraduate study to achieve Chartered status.

Practical experience is essential in today's employment market; our programmes combine theory with practical work to allow our students to put their knowledge to the test. As well as practical lab sessions and project work our students gain first-hand experience of construction through our six-day residential Constructionarium field trip.

We encourage our students to seek opportunities to enhance their employability and since 2003 we have been running the SUCCESS scholarship scheme partnering students with sponsoring companies to gain valuable work experience and additional financial support.

We also provide teaching in software products widely used by industry such as AutoCAD and revit architecture. In 2012 20% of our first year undergraduates attained Autodesk® certification status in AutoCAD, a significant additional achievement.

We continue to push at the boundaries of knowledge and understanding in engineering - developing the discipline as well as teaching it!
