Southampton Management School

Research assessment

Across the board, the University of Southampton has maintained its position in RAE rankings as one of the UK’s top universities in 2008. In this first major assessment of UK research since 2001, Southampton remains one of the country’s strongest universities for a wide range of subjects in engineering, medicine, humanities and social sciences.

The Southampton Management School achieved an impressive result in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which ranks the quality of research carried out across UK universities.

In the 2008 RAE, the School achieved a result of 2.6. Fifty-five per cent of the submitted research papers in a wide range of areas, from Management Science to Accountancy and Finance, have been judged 'world class' or 'internationally excellent' in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

“These results are important to students. As part of a major research-led university, we use the results of our research to teach our students how businesses operate now, not how companies were run five years ago.”

Professor Terry Williams, Head of the School of Management
