The Centre for Language Study (CLS), based at Avenue Campus, provides language learning for staff and students across the University.
Equipped with the very latest technology, the Centre has a wide range of courses and resources including:
Language Resources Centre
Located at Avenue Campus, the Centre boasts extensive facilities which are available to all staff and students to support their language learning requirements. The Language Resource Centre includes dedicated French, English, German and Spanish resources rooms, two language laboratories, an extensive multi-media collection of topic-based materials, self-access courses in around thirty languages, reference books, multi-lingual dictionaries, international newspapers and periodicals, satellite television from around the world and a large library of multi-lingual audio and video recordings.

Learning a language as part of your degree
If your programme allows (through free elective modules or a minor hyperlink), you can take credit-bearing language modules. These are available in wide variety of languages including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. With the CLS, you can take a language at one of seven language stages, from absolute beginners to near-native speaker level in a range of languages. At each stage the courses are designed to develop your skills in spoken and written language and to enable you to make steady and rapid progress.

English for Academic Study Programme
The English for Academic Study Programme is aimed at international students who are planning to come to the U.K. for undergraduate or postgraduate study and who need to develop their English language and academic study skills before starting a degree programme.

The University offers a wide range of pre-sessional courses for international students who are planning to come to the UK for undergraduate or postgraduate study at University of Southampton. These courses will help you develop the English Language skills you will need to follow a degree course or undertake research at a British university.

We offer an extensive programme of language courses to the public including evening classes at various levels, intensive summer courses for complete beginners, lunchtime lessons (for UoS staff and students only), language clubs and study days.

A Language Advisory Service is available in the Language Resources Centre to give advice and support to anyone wishing to learn or already learning a language. It is an opportunity for you to discuss your language learning (or proposed language learning) needs and interests constructively in an informal setting. Advisers will help you to analyse, plan and manage your own progress in the language according to your individual learning style, needs, goals and interests.

IELTS Testing Centre
The university of Southampton is an approved IELTS testing centre with regular tests scheduled throughout the year.
