History and Archaeology of the Ship

Re-Launch: John Illsley’s

History and Archaeology of the Ship

To those of you who are familiar with this resource and wondered where it had got to: John Illsley retired from Bangor in September, and fearful that this resource might wither on the vine, he decided to transfer it to a new home where it would remain publicly accessible. The utility of these pages is an open secret amongst students of maritime archaeology around the world. Those who have been directed to them or who have discovered them by chance have been hardly able to believe their luck, finding them a Godsend for essays, general research and a signpost for further reading.

Maritime connections between Bangor and Southampton have always been strong, with several of John’s students having progressed to the Masters program in Maritime Archaeology. So a transfer to the University of Southampton’s Centre for Maritime Archaeology web site is particularly fitting.

Initially the pages will remain accessible in their current form but as new material is published links will be created to take you to relevant articles and interim reports on the CMA pages as well as other sites. In this way the History and Archaeology of the Ship will remain a dynamic educational tool. Who knows, we may even persuade John to chip in occasionally?
