Research interests
Professor Simon Keay researches into the archaeology of the Roman Empire, with particular emphasis on trade, urbanism and culture change in the west Mediterranean basin and ploughzone archaeology. He has undertaken field projects in Spain at Tarragona, Peñaflor and Italica and has recently completed the AHRC-funded project “Urban Connectivity in Iron-Age and Roman Southern Spain” project, which he is currently publishing jointly with Dr. Graeme Earl (Southampton). He was PI and co-director of the AHRC-funded “Roman towns in the Tiber Valley Project”, the publication of which is nearly complete, and Director of the AHRC funded project “Roman Amphorae: A Digital Resource”. He is currently Research Professor at the British School at Rome, where he directs BSR archaeology and its geophysics programme in conjunction with APSS of the University of Southampton, the PI of the AHRC-funded “Portus Project”, which he co-directs with Graeme Earl (Southampton) and Martin Millett (Cambridge), Director of the “Port Networks Project” and co-Director (with Martin Millett of the University of Cambridge) of the study of Roman towns in southern Lazio and northern Campania.
