Research interests

Dr David Wheatley (Senior Lecturer) specialises in the application of computers to archaeological problems. He is a member of the Archaeological Computing Research Group. His research interests include the application of image processing and GIS technologies to archaeological research and management, also the use and development of computer-based simulation, database systems, virtual reality modelling and distributed multimedia. In addition, Dr Wheatley specialises in archaeological theory, particularly relating to issues of perception, and to the adoption of new technologies within archaeology.

Dr Wheatley also has research interests in prehistoric archaeology, with active research projects studying both southern England and Andalucia, Spain. He is the co-director of the "Negotiating Avebury Project" with Dr M Gillings (University of Leicester) and Dr J Pollard (University of Wales). This includes exacavations at the Avebury henge and its environs including the Longstones enclosure, Beckhampton Avenue and West Kennet Avenue sites (1999, 2000, 2002). In collaboration with Prof. SJ Keay he studies the development of the archaeological landscape in southern Spain from the Neolithic to post-Roman periods. This work now includes a major AHRB funded research project to investigate network approaches to the later Iron Age and Roman settlements in the region and, in collaboration with Dr Leonardo Garcia Sanjuan (Seville University), excavation of a neolithic dolmen and chalcolithic chambered tomb near Almaden de la Plata, Seville province (2001-2002).
