Maritime archaeology research area
This theme is structured around the Centre for Maritime Archaeology (CMA), whilst drawing on expertise, teaching and research interests from across the department. Maritime research in archaeology continues to be focussed on the development and application of novel theoretical and practical approaches throughout the maritime sphere. Our ongoing work in areas as diverse as port studies, coastal palaeo-landscapes, medieval ship construction, and South Asian maritime ethnography demonstrate the breadth and sophistication of the work undertaken across this theme. Other research areas include fieldwork on the harbour at Mareotis, Alexandria, research in Scandinavia, the Channel Islands, across the Mediterranean, and the Far East. The social dimension, in concert with cutting-edge scientific practice, underlies all our work within this theme, with a notable focus on social theory, engagements with landscape and perception. Collaborative activity within this theme, in particular with the Southampton School of Ocean and Earth Science, supports this balance of innovation in both theory and practice.
The theme incorporates an internationally renowned Masters programme and supports a considerable breadth of PhD research. The Land and Sea conference held at Southampton and the Journal of Maritime Archaeology further support our vibrant maritime archaeology environment.
