Introducing your degree

Maritime Engineering Science is an MSc course designed for graduates, or similarly qualified, with an engineering, scientific or mathematical background, who desire to pursue a career in maritime sector. An introductory module is provided at the start to give students the fundamental knowledge necessary for them to succeed in the course. This masters in Maritime Engineering Science / Marine Engineering one-year course enables students to specialise in marine engineering systems on board ships and offshore platforms that facilitate their functional capability.

Overview

Understanding how marine systems work is essential to their efficient design and operation. You will learn to apply advanced control design techniques and enhance your knowledge of instrumentation and sensors. You will also learn to analyse and design advanced power, propulsion, heating and cooling systems using thermodynamic principles.

The year is divided into two semesters. Each semester, in addition to a set of specialist modules, you have the opportunity to select option modules including fuel cells, batteries and maritime robotics. In the last four months, you will focus on research. You will complete a major research project and take advantage of our world-class maritime engineering facilities to perform your experimental work. You will also learn the broader principles of marine safety, law and management.

This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Entry Requirements

Typical entry requirements

Honours Degree

2:1 honours degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University) or above in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics. We may also consider applicants with undergraduate degrees in Oceanography or Architecture, or applicants from Marine Academies - please contact us before applying for more information.

Equivalent Qualifications

Relevant employment experience would be considered if a candidate does not meet the formal qualifications requirements. We are always happy to receive applications from candidates with an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University. If you are unsure about our entry criteria, please contact our admissions staff who would be happy to provide advice in advance of your application.

English Language requirements

If your first language is not English, we need to ensure that your listening, written and spoken English skills would enable you to enjoy the full benefit of your studies. For entry onto our programmes, you will need an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University.

Intake: 30-50

All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy. Typical course content

You will study a number of compulsory and optional subjects during both semesters. These provide sound preparation for the final part of the degree, the Research Project.

Year 1

The first 8 months are normally spent mainly on the taught component, with lectures divided into two 12-week periods (Semesters 1 and 2), and with exams at the end of each semester. The final 4 months are spent full-time on a research project.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

EquipmentApproved calculators: Candidates may use calculators in the examination room only as specified by the University and as permitted by the rubric of individual examination papers. The University approved models are Casio FX-570 and Casio FX-85GT Plus. These may be purchased from any source and no longer need to carry the University logo.

BooksWhere a module specifies core texts these should generally be available on the reserve list in the library. However due to demand, students may prefer to buy their own copies. These can be purchased from any source. Some modules suggest reading texts as optional background reading. The library may hold copies of such texts, or alternatively you may wish to purchase your own copies. Although not essential reading, you may benefit from the additional reading materials for the module.
EquipmentDesign equipment and materials: Standard construction/modelling materials will be provided where appropriate, unless otherwise specified in a module profile. For customisation of designs/models calling for material other than standard construction/ modelling materials, students will bear the costs of such alternatives.
EquipmentField equipment and materials: A number of essential items will be provided to you e.g.: field notebook(s); compass-clinometer; geological hammer; steel tape measure; map case; pocket lens (x 10); safety helmet; safety goggles; bottle of dilute hydrochloric acid. However, you will need provide yourselves with a ruler; a pair of compasses; set squares; protractor; pencils (including coloured); eraser; calculator, penknife. These can be purchased from any source.
ClothingField course clothing: You will need to wear suitable clothing when attending field courses, e.g. waterproofs, walking boots. You can purchase these from any source.
Printing and copyingIn some cases, coursework and/or projects may be submitted electronically. Where it is not possible to submit electronically students will be liable for printing costs, which are detailed in the individual module profile.
OtherOptional visits: Some modules may include additional optional visits. You will normally be expected to cover the cost of travel and admission, unless otherwise specified in the module profile.

The maritime sector provides many and varied career opportunities in engineering and project management related roles. Maritime Engineering Science graduates are in strong demand with good starting salaries and excellent career progression opportunities.

Our graduates work across many different organisations. The Solent region around Southampton is the main UK hub for the maritime sector with organisations such as Lloyd’s Register, Carnival, BMT Nigel Gee, Maritime and Coastguard agency and many others based nearby. Organisations such BAE Systems, QinetiQ and Babcock support primarily the defence sector and employ a good number of our graduates. The offshore and marine renewable developments are offering excellent prospects both to work in the UK (locally, London or Aberdeen) or worldwide in places such as Singapore, Houston or Perth, etc.
