The re-discovery of the Imperial Palace at Portus, the port of ancient Rome

Presented by Professor Simon Keay, Archaeology, School of Humanities

The Roman port of Portus is revealing its secrets to an international team of archaeologists, led by the University of Southampton. An Imperial Palace and amphitheatre that could have welcomed the emperors Trajan and Hadrian have been uncovered so far at the site, which is twice the size of the present-day port of Southampton.

Professor Simon Keay, Director of the Portus Project, will describe the startling discoveries at the empire's major cargo port and explain how they improve our understanding of the Roman world.
