Dr Bismark Singh awarded the Mathematics 2023 Young Investigator award

Head and shoulders of Dr Singh

The award is given annually to one researcher who is within ten years of their PhD in recognition of their excellence in the field of mathematics.

In 2023, Dr Bismark Singh also received his habilitation (with a title of Dr. Dr. habil.) in Mathematics from FAU, Germany. The habilitation is the highest academic qualification in several countries where it is often a requirement for a full professorship. Dr Singh received his PhD in 2016 and began this process in early 2020.

Dr Singh also received further good news that his application for Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) was accepted. The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics and its applications. The IMA exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture.

Dr Bismark Singh has commented that:

“2023 was an academically fruitful year for me. I owe my success to the support of my collaborators worldwide and my students."

His research focusses on decision-making under uncertainty and he formulates real-world problems, faced by industry or governments, as mathematical optimisation problems and then create methods to solve them. Often, such methods are available as standard packages in commercial solvers, but due to the astronomically large number of choices of an optimal solution, such methods can be computationally intractable.

The question of enumerating choices is central to his work in this area of operations research. He develops and uses models pervasively to:

  • design resilient systems that are less vulnerable to attack
  • propose strategies to combat infectious disease outbreaks
  • construct sustainable energy systems.

"All three of these examples are part of UKRI’s Strategic Themes, something I wasn’t aware of before moving to the UK. Recently, I am studying a new topic - waste management – that I expect will become a fourth hot-topic of this century.”
