Friday 17th July 2020, 10-11.30 am (coordinators: Jayne Love and Adriana Patino). Guest Speaker: Peter Browning (PhD researcher UCL)

This seminar will investigate the relationship between ethnography and (socio)linguistics, and the positioning of (socio)linguistic ethnography as a field of research.  As concepts of nationality and citizenship are questioned in today’s world, so are traditional language boundaries.  The current research trends around multilingualism and mobility challenge basic assumptions around what language is, redefining language.  The session will further explore nonverbal communication and sensory aspects of language, as ethnographic methods show that language is more than just words.  It is hoped that this workshop will assist in rethinking the language that we use to talk about language in ethnography.
