Tuesday 8 – Sunday 13 May, 2018

Tate Exchange floor is open daily, Tue – Sun, 12.00 – 18.00. In addition to main events listed below, the exhibition and various activities run every day from Wed – Sun.

Day 1
Tuesday 8 May - Installing a Biennale...

Meet staff and students from Winchester School of Art and Bose Krishnamachari (founding director of Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India) as they collaborate to install large-scale artworks and establish the Biennale Office, an open space to learn about the diversity of biennale practices.
Schedule: 12 – 4pm Live installing of work | 4.30pm Discussion with Bose Krishnamachari

Day 2
Wednesday 9 May - How to Biennale!
(free, but limited places – booking required)
A knowledge exchange event for those involved in and/or aspiring to be involved in the development of art events and exhibitions. Participants are invited to formulate materials for the book ‘How to Biennale! The Manual’, a useful and practical guide to making your own art events, conceived & edited by Shwetal A. Patel & Sunil Manghani.

Day 3
Thursday 10 May – Working with Artists

A range of participatory activities scheduled on the floor, including calligraphy with Zhang Qiang; and art-making with the Print, Painting, and Sculpture studios of Winchester School of Art.
Schedule: 12 – 6pm Exhibition open & activities throughout the day

Day 4
Friday 11 May – Drawing Together

Join in with a series of participatory performances from the Chinese calligraphy artist Zhang Qiang and collaborate on the making of silk scrolls to exhibit on the Tate Exchange floor.
Schedule: 1 – 4pm Zhang Qiang performances every half an hour | 4.30pm In Dialogue

Day 5
Saturday 12 May – The Ideal Spectator: Open Auditions at Tate Modern

Auditions open for the position of spectator or even impostor artist! A participatory event devised and directed by Zuleikha Chaudhari, with the participation of Sudarshan Shetty. See also Robert E. D’Souza’s film installation and work from the National Art & Design Saturday Club.

Day 6
Sunday 13 May - Imagined Biennales

An open forum to present and debate ideas for the future of biennales and art events.

Building an Art Biennale is a week-long event at Tate Exchange, organized by Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. In addition to the main events listed above, a variety of participatory activities will be available for all to join in on a daily basis.
