Event details

The Centre for Transnational Studies hosts a new initiative on Debating Ethnography. The initiative was launched by Professor Marion Demossier and ML postgraduates Shawnee Harkness and Clelia Viecelli Giannotti. Its aim is to foster a research forum across the various disciplinary strands in Modern Languages, to engage more widely with ethnography as a research method, involve multi-disciplinary interest across the University and to examine its relevance to modern societies.

The session will be hosting Chiara Arnavas and Michele Serafini, two PhD students in Social Anthropology who have just come back from their fieldwork in India and Nepal, respectively. It will be an occasion to discuss about methodological dilemmas and personal challenges that characterise the fieldwork experience.

Speaker information

Chiara Arnavas is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She has just completed a two-year ethnographic study of land dispossessions among refugees and Muslim communities in Kolkata, India. Her work aims to challenge established portrayals of neo-liberal land regimes, contributing to the anthropology of economy and politics.

Michele Serafini is a PhD candidate at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He is currently working on a SOAS Research Studentship-funded project titled ‘Playing at Football: Time, Pleasure and Identity Politics in Transnational Nepal’, investigating youth cultures at the crossroad between post-disaster politics and global shifts in temporality and connectivity.
