On 20th and 21st July 2022, Southampton Business School (SBS), University of Southampton Malaysia(UoSM) and UTM jointly hosted the second Global Leadership Conference on our Johor Campus.

The two-day programme covered a variety of contemporary issues in global leadership and featured expert speakers from UK and Malaysia. It was an impactful brand promotion for the university in the region, with more than 100 attendees from higher education and enterprise. We were blessed with a stellar list of speakers, including high-profile dignitaries in Malaysia, Datuk Dr. Hafsah Hashim, Datuk Zunaidah Idris, and Dato Chang Khim Wah. The event covered six themes in sustainability & profitability, innovation & technology, leadership & global society, talent management in the post-covid era, enterprise & entrepreneurship for digital economy, and developing future talent for the workplace. In addition to the panel discussions, Dr. Ajit Nayak delivered a knowledge exchange workshop on the Columbia Case Study, which enabled attendees to exchange ideas and solutions on challenges facing leadership. Prof Rebecca Taylor, CEO of UoSM, and Prof Laura Constanzo, Head of SBS, delivered the opening and closing addresses.

The Global Leadership Conference was designed as Faculty of Social Sciences and SBS’ global leadership training venture. The first event was launched with great success in January 2019 in Bihar, India. GLC Malaysia has been planned in an equal partner arrangement between SBS/FIO and the UoSM team. It was initiated to launch in 2020 but postponed twice due to the pandemic. The delegation is pleased to be in the position to travel again, to meet face to face, and present at this learning and networking opportunity.

As project manager and MC of the event, Song Pan Utz reflected: “I want to thank all the colleagues in SBS and UoSM who worked on stage and behind the scenes to make the conference a fantastic learning and networking experience. We hope that some impact of the panel discussions will stay with the audience, even change some of their choices, and turn ideas into actions."

Dr. Ajit Nayak commented: " “It was really exciting to visit the new UoSM campus in Johor. The new campus was fantastic and an excellent venue for the GLC. The quality of speakers for the conference was outstanding. The participants were really engaging – it was a pleasure to facilitate the case study on the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster.”

Dr. Larisa Yarovaya said" “It was a pleasure to meet colleagues in UoS Malaysia and see the fantastic state the of art facilities there. The GLC is such a great learning experience for all leaders, can highly recommend".
