Politics and International Relations

Politics and International Relations Courses

You will gain a thorough grounding in the study of politics and international relations, enabling you to analyse global politics. You will explore democracy and justice in today’s society and evaluate the theories, systems and policies that shape contemporary politics.

You will acquire advanced knowledge and skills in research methods, data and public policy analysis to pave the way for a career in foreign affairs, international organisations, non-governmental organisations or the Civil Service.

You will learn from leading academics who are strong in areas, including Latin American and European politics. Our flexible courses allow you to specialise in areas that interest you and you will also gain transferable skills that are highly sought after in both public and private sector jobs.

OUR UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

As part of our undergraduate community, you will receive a comprehensive grounding in central areas of international concern, from global governance and migration to international security, development and public policy.

You will explore the core topics of domestic and international politics, including political parties, security, public policy, human rights, and climate change, alongside more advanced modules covering key theories, practice skills and the analysis of international relations.

You can enhance your degree further by choosing to study abroad through our exchange partners around the world including Europe, the Far East and North America, or experience your learning from real-world or alternative perspectives on one of our field trip opportunities.

Our undergraduate alumni have gone on to follow careers in think-tank analysis, journalism, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, government departments and the Civil Service.

OUR POSTGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

As a politics and international relations postgraduate student, you will be involved in rigorous research training, helping you develop key skills crucial to your future career.

You can choose from a diverse suite of modules ranging from intensive studies of individual states to topics such as globalisation, political economy, democracy, governance and citizenship.

Your study will involve innovative learning through problem-based activities and you can take part in collaborative, interdisciplinary learning opportunities across social sciences.

OUR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Living and learning in a different country is a big step, so we strive to ensure that our international students have all the support they need to settle into their new life in the UK. Our friendly International Office staff are always happy to help and can answer any questions you may have about living and studying here.

Welcome Programme

Every September, we arrange a free Welcome Programme for international and EU students, which is designed to help you settle into life in the UK and at the University before your studies begin.

During the Programme, you will meet other undergraduate students and explore the University and the city, so that you know where to worship, relax and shop. You will also meet current international students who will be able to share their experiences and offer advice.

Meet and Greet

We organise a free Meet and Greet service for all new international and EU students in September each year. Our representatives meet you at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport and transport you directly to your accommodation.

Pre-sessional programmes

We offer a wide range of pre-sessional programmes for international students who are planning to come to Southampton to study. These programmes will help you develop the English language skills you will need to follow a degree course or undertake research at a British university.

Visas

Before you join us, you will need to find out about the UK’s immigration procedures well in advance of your arrival in the UK.
