Sociology and Criminology

Sociology and Criminology Courses

You will delve into topical global challenges exploring a range of sociology and criminology areas including social inequality and cultural diversity, the changing nature of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system.

You will join a sociology, social policy and criminology community that has been central to Social Sciences at Southampton for more than 40 years and will benefit from the expertise of leading academics whose views are sought by government.

Sociology students will look at how their experiences are shaped by class, gender and race, while criminology students will investigate why people commit crime, their punishment and how crime could be prevented.

OUR UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

As students of sociology and criminology, you will be taught by academics who are actively influencing policy with their research.

You will gain vital research and analytical skills, while developing the ability to think critically, debate topical issues and conduct your own research on real-world problems.

Sociology students will closely examine social life, exploring the way people think and interact as they negotiate the modern world. While criminology students will examine the sociological aspects of crime, gaining a greater understanding of crime and punishment around the world and over time.

You can join our recent sociology graduates who have gone on to a wide range of careers in government, the voluntary sector, the Civil Service, business and finance and social work, or our recent criminology students who have gone on to work in criminal justice, management, and planning and delivering public services.

OUR POSTGRADUATE PORTFOLIO

As part of our postgraduate community, you will study alongside internationally respected academics across all our research areas.

Criminology students will examine topics fundamental to advancing their understanding of the causes, consequences and responses to crime. Sociology and social policy students will investigate sociological concepts and link them to areas such as social risk and the welfare state.

All postgraduate students will explore a diverse series of topics to unlock a range of career options in a constantly evolving field.

OUR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Living and learning in a different country is a big step, so we strive to ensure that our international students have all the support they need to settle into their new life in the UK. Our friendly International Office staff are always happy to help and can answer any questions you may have about living and studying here.

Welcome Programme

Every September, we arrange a free Welcome Programme for international and EU students, which is designed to help you settle into life in the UK and at the University before your studies begin.

During the Programme, you will meet other undergraduate students and explore the University and the city, so that you know where to worship, relax and shop. You will also meet current international students who will be able to share their experiences and offer advice.

Meet and Greet

We organise a free Meet and Greet service for all new international and EU students in September each year. Our representatives meet you at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport and transport you directly to your accommodation.

Pre-sessional programmes

We offer a wide range of pre-sessional programmes for international students who are planning to come to Southampton to study. These programmes will help you develop the English language skills you will need to follow a degree course or undertake research at a British university.

Visas

Before you join us, you will need to find out about the UK’s immigration procedures well in advance of your arrival in the UK.
