Supported by the EU and the ACP Group of States, this project is a collaboration between the University of Southampton and the Universities of Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, the Witwatersrand (South Africa) and Zambia. It aims to strengthen training in Demography and to build up networks in the subject across the SADC region.
What we do
Starting in January 2009 the EDULINK STARND project is an exciting collaboration between a number of universities to strengthen demographic capability in Southern Africa. There are three strands to the project:
-
A socio-economic needs analysis of each country involved in the project: through interviews with decision makers and potential employers of demography graduates it is possible to identify the main areas where expertise is needed in each country. Matching up these needs to the demographic curriculum in each institution will identify the gaps and lead to new material being developed to fill those gaps.
-
An institutional need analysis within the partner institutions: by assessing the institutional hold-ups and issues that are inherent in any institution it is possible to identify the bottlenecks and training requirements. By fulfilling these training needs it is again hoped that demography in each institution can be strengthened.
-
A study of non-communicable diseases and obesity in sub-Saharan Africa: obtaining up to date information on a neglected element of health in the region will provide research that can be added to teaching and to help in the drive to improve health across sub-Saharan Africa
The project aims to provide a forum for demographers in the region to meet and to strenthen their programmes together. This is facilitated by meetings in South Africa, Malaiw, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia at regular periods - for training, to build networks and to present research.
