Last week, Professor Yvonne Baatz, Dr Filip Saranovic and Aygun Mammadzada attended the “How European is European Private International Law?” conference held by the Faculty of Law, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena.

Held in Berlin 2-3 March the conference aimed to ‘aim to shed light on the present lack of "Europeanness" of European private international law and to discuss how European private international law can become more truly European in the future.’

Speakers and delegates came from around Europe, due to the heavy snow the UK’s academic community was solely represented by Yvonne, Filip and Aygun.

Southampton Law School PhD candidate Aygun commented:

"It was a great honour and pleasure for me to have an opportunity to represent Southampton Law School as a part of the team with my professors at the truly European Conference in Berlin.

The well-organised conference with a great variety of the international academics and practitioners and exchange of the ideas on the current legal climate and future trends brought new insights on evolving European Private International Law. A particular attention was paid to what the scholars and specialists are trying or should try to achieve towards getting a real success of this "rocket science of law".

I am very confident that the conference will help me to make an original contribution to the field, I do recommend every research student take advantage such networking and academic opportunites.

Lastly, I would like to take a chance to express my deep gratitude to the Law School and my professors for their irreplaceable support which makes me enthusiastic and inspired in the field".
