Oscar Festa, final-year IROE PhD student, attended the 42nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE). This year's 42nd OMAE was held in person from the 10th to the 16th of July 2023 in Melbourne, Australia. As with last year's edition in Hamburg, Oscar had a wonderful time visiting a new city and discussing his research with expert ocean engineers from industry and academia.

On the second day of the conference, Oscar presented his paper “Analytical model of non-linear load reduction devices for catenary moorings”. As non-linear load reduction devices are becoming an increasingly common consideration for FOWT moorings, traditional catenary equations which only account for linear elasticity are showing their limitations. The paper presents extended versions of the traditional catenary equations, with additional terms, to obtain a fully analytical model of mooring systems with load reduction devices.

The fully analytical model has the advantage of being fast and reliable to solve, and as such lends itself well to lightweight web-based programming. Oscar presented a draft version of a web-based Python tool, which allows users to input various LRD stiffness curves and mooring system parameters and visualise the resulting tension-offset profile of the full mooring system.
