The Royal Society Science Policy Primer is a residential course that aims to help researchers better understand the rapidly changing policy landscape in the UK, and how science research helps to shape and is shaped by Government policy.

The course was run in partnership with the King’s Policy Institute and Different Angles and was held from 19th to 21st March at the De Vere Horsley Estate, Surry. Each day included a mix of talks and workshops ranging from an introduction to UK government, Parliament and the Civil Service, and workshops on communicating with policy makers and translating science to policy impact.

The Royal Society also invited a range of guest speakers with extensive experience in the science policy making space, including the Chief Scientific Adviser in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Chief Science Policy Officer at the Royal Society and Director of Policy at the British Academy.

Dr Katherine Kwa, supported by a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowship and the RAEng Chair in Emerging Technologies Centre of Excellence IROE, was invited to attend the Science Policy Primer along with other RAEng Research Fellows and Royal Society Fellows. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how science and engineering research can fit together with policy making. The course content was excellent and the opportunity to meet and network with the participants and speakers was invaluable.
