Event details

The Portuguese-Speaking Diaspora: Transnational Relocations, Identities and Integration. An international conference hosted by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton

This conference has arisen out of an inaugural workshop on Portuguese-Speaking Diaspora in the UK, held in 2007 at Manchester Metropolitan University, and its primary focus is an essentially interdisciplinary and comparative exploration of transnational Portuguese speakers who have settled in the UK, in other parts of Europe, in the Americas, or in the Far East. The aim is to examine similarities and differences between the different diaspora groups. To this end, papers will focus on sociolinguistic, sociocultural, economic, sociological and educational aspects of integration and (non) assimilation processes, such as intra-communal, inter-communal and transnational relationships, social, regional and economic distribution and self-identification practices.
