Ir. Dr. Ahmad Syahrin Idris B. Eng (Hons), M. Phil, Dr. Eng.
Assistant Professor , Electrical and Electronic Engineering Lecturer

Ir. Dr. Ahmad Syahrin Idris is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering and is the Deputy Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering program at the University of Southampton Malaysia. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Syahrin Idris joined the University of Southampton Malaysia as a Lecturer in 2019 after completing his PhD degree in Opto-electronics at Kyushu University, Japan.
Syahrin’s undergraduate degree was in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. He later earned an M.Phil. research degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering whilst working at The University of Sheffield, UK where he fabricated and characterized complementary p-i-n and n-i-p Silicon Carbide for use in photodetectors. He later obtained his PhD in Opto-electronics from Kyushu University, Japan where he developed new fabrication techniques for Germanium and sol-gel based materials for optical waveguides.
His research interest encompasses fabrication and characterization of new materials for optical waveguides for future photonic integrated circuits and design-for-test methodologies (DFT) for integrated circuits. He was also a research staff at the University of Sheffield where he developed fabrication recipes and characterization of III-V materials for avalanche photodetector applications. He has extensive industrial experience where he was a Product Development Engineer specializing in structural DFT for Intel and was a Senior Test Development Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor developing test solutions for automotive and industrial microcontrollers. Currently, he is teaching Electrical Materials and Fields (ELEC1206), Solid State Devices (ELEC1205) and Applied Electromagnetism (ELEC2232). Ir. Dr. Ahmad Syahrin Idris is also a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and the Institute of Engineers Malaysia.
